Team Building Leadership ADVICE
The Key to True Team Building.
In any situation where there are groups of people, a need will arise for some kind of leadership to develop.
This leadership requirement may be very simple and supportive, or it may be required to be more robust, directive and accountable.
Either way, there are specific actions attitudes and values that are important to the success of that role as a positive constructive higher ground leader.
The Acronym ADVICE provides a friendly framework to explore some possible leadership insights.
Authenticity & Action
In order to generate respect, social capital and action-ability leaders will need to be real, honest, open and authentic in their handling of their people. It takes a life time to build trust and a second to break it. With out trust people will not be fully engaged, which limits their propensity for action. And action is where the rubber-meets-the road. - Prime challenge in most companies is execution of agreed strategy.
Decisions & Destiny
Most companies "give" (read "push") responsibility without commensurate authority. too many people are fearful of making any decisions, just incase they are the wrong ones and they take flack! Unless people are empowered and supported with a safe workplace to TAKE responsibility, decisions will continue to be shed and destiny will continue to be an elusive dream.
Vision, Values & Validation
Vision is the attractor, or the fuel that moves people from where they are to a future destination. It is the focusing energy to get teamwork through a unified picture and understanding of the target. Values are the guides that delineate the lines of where / how the team operates with each other and other that are impacted. The challenge, quite often is, that values are espoused and put up on all the walls in shining displays of grandeur, yet management and leader SELDOM truely "walk their talk".
Integrity, Inspiration
If there is no integrity there is definitely no inspiration! Inspiration comes from deep within. It's the fuel that engages passion, commitment, creativity and collaboration for the greater good of the whole. The problem is integrity doesn't seem to exist much in business any more. - witness so many scandala where the boss (or leaders /managers) have misappropriated million and billions. Witness our politicians who lie, steal and cheat, almost openly, Witness political parties and governments who clear do the same. Their actions destroy the core fabric of trust, truth and value in our society and country.
Clarity, Compassion, Courage & Care
With clarity we know what needs to be done and what we must stop doing. Clarity reduces confusion and unleashed energy. Compassion, something really missing in our money driven world, enables people to bring out the best in people by valuing them, supporting them and understanding the real challenges they face. It take courage to use 4-letter words in the workplace, like care, soft, feel, fond, like and love. It take courage to really care and show it in the workplace. I feel that this is our missing link at work and at home!
Energy, Enthusiasm, Engagement, Experience
No matter what we do we require energy. Energy is what we are. Energy in motion = emotion. Emotions stretch into moods. Moods predisposition us to actions Moods also control engagement levels. No matter what happens we always have some kind of experience - the challenge is to ensure we have positive, supportive, energy building experiences that build rather than break. With pervasive low self-esteem, a conscious effort needs to be focused on building a workplace that grows and builds self esteem vs pressures and break them down.
